Insulation
Insulation is a hot topic in van builds. While there are certainly pros and cons with every product out there we utilize Thinsulate by 3M in our builds. Here are a few reasons why we choose Thinsulate over some of the other options.
Thinsulate is designed and engineered specifically for vehicles. 3M Research and Development team has thoroughly tested this product in many conditions to ensure you stay warm.
The material is fire retardant meaning you can hold an open flame to it and it will not catch fire unlike many other products.
It is hydrophobic and will resist absorption of moisture, so you don’t need to worry about mold growing behind your walls.
Its easy to install and DIY friendly and does not require any special tools to install.
If you are ever in an accident in your van Thinsulate insulation is easily removable so the damage can be fixed.
Provides acoustic sound dampening to reduce road noise and noise from those noisy campgrounds.
Its very lightweight.
No off gassing or obnoxious odors.
Other insulation options that deserve an honorable mention in our mind is Havelock wool and spray foam insulation.
Installation tips and tricks Thinsulate is very easy to install and can easily be done by any DIYer. The only tool I recommend if a sharp pair of scissors. Thinsulate is quite a tough material so I would not recommend stealing your mothers kitchen shears as they will not be returned in the same condidtion. Below is a link to the pair I used that are spring loaded saving your hand half the work but, expect to have tired hands at the end of the day regardless.
